There's a reason they use hard lines on a automatic transmission. I did this on a motorhome, I once had, that was built on a GM chassis. The hose blew away in about 10 miles. Make certain you use pressure rated hose because of the fluid pressures generated by the trans. I would also use more hose than necessary and double clamp.

Yah some guy on the internet told me not to change my engine oil because it holds all the seals in, so i haven't. Also deer urine can be used in the radiator, and if you fill your tires with 80+ PSI you'll get better mileage.

Fwiw after reading this thread....I'm going the 'add a little, drive a little' route till its all replaced.
I just got mine at 216k and I have no idea what has happened to it before me.

When I look at "risk and reward", there is more risk in leaving extremely old and dirty fluid in your transmission than there is risk to try to gradually replace it with fresh.

I've heard this too! I myself am sitting at 235k miles, but unfortunately you have me beat because you know the history of the the XJ, I don't! I bought this last fall with that amount. I was concerned with the doing all the fluid flushes and took it into a shop and they really didn't recommend it due to that same reason you stated. They said sometimes the old fluid is usually what helps everything stay together after so long. Until they found out I had a manual transmission, they were all for it! They said the manual tranny is not as sensitive as the automatic.

When I changed mine at 198k everything started to leak. It came out the tube, around the gasket, and out front seal. I guess the previous/original fluid had enough crap in it that it blocked the holes that the new fluid found. 2 years later it still leaks I wish I had left it alone.

At least we can all agree that it usually isn't that hard to find parts for our vehicle. Trying to get something rebuilt is when things can get pricey!

I wish it had been that simple. Fluid change knocked debris loose and clogged the return line from the tranny cooler and started to overheat. That was the fluid out of the tube (bad o ring there as well) and also killed the front shaft seal. A used jy AW4 will be going to the rebuild shop soon to be swapped.

If so, that's why we don't recommend flushing the transmission.

The Peep just rolled over 546000 km on the way home tonight. Changed the fluid and filter just last week, as we often do. This is the original AW4 and 4.0L. The Peep runs 60000km yearly in all conditions. I run an auxilliary cooler spaced forward in front of rad, drivers side. I change the fluid every 6 - 8 months and the fluid and filter 16-18 months. The trans continues to work thru the full range. This is cheap maintenance compared to replacing a trans. I recommend fluid and filter changes for longevity.
