2wd to 4wd
So i've looked at alot of post lately and in the future i will make my 1996 jeep cherokee a 4wd. So for posting here i need some help!! If anyones has done this to a 96 please post. I want to know what all i need to do this with some part numbers if available. I no i'm 17 but i think i can go threw with this if i get some help from CF
I no i need a few things so please add to the list and fix it if anything is wrong..
-complete front axle (same ratio to rear)?
-4wd tranny & T-case?
-driveshafts? Don't understand to much about this so
-shifter & linkage
-And longer speedo drive cable which isn't a problem.
So what i need to no is what kind of front axle i need. i have a 96 jeep cherokee stock 5 speed. I also need to know what kind of tranny and transfer case i need with the drive shafts.
Thanks for all the help and if anyone has the parts for sell, i'm in Middle, Ga.

We did this to a buddies 89 XJ. Get a Front axle with matching gears (if your jeep is Auto with the 4L You have 3.55s and if its standard with the 4L you have 3.07s) You will want to pull the trans with transfer case (get the cross member as well) You will also want front and rear drive shafts. The swap is very straight forward. Once you pull the front 2wd tube out just bolt the new 4wd axle in same for the transmission/t-case. The 4x linkage that goes into the cabin has a small plate that is screwed in place of the 4x handle so just take that out and put the handle in place. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask... Have fun with the swap

This is what i did. Even though it wasn't a 96, the conversion is basically the same thing.
Look here for the stock specs.
I stole the tranny with the tcase attached and the front end, along with the driveshafts. From a 87 XJ 4.0L , and all of it was bolt on/compatible with my 93 XJ 4.0L. The project wasn't bad at all, it took me 3 weeks with the little time a have.

The best bet is to find a donor rig, way easier that way and you're guaranteed to have all the parts you need, X2 on craigslist
