Question 2wd XJ Transmission Output Shaft leak.. ><

My 95 2wd Cherokee has a decent leak at the output shaft seal. Would this most likely just require a new seal? Or bushing or more? I have been looking through old posts (most are from 09-12) and most have dead links by this point..
I just changed the transmission fluid and trans filter a month ago since I just bought this XJ in April. I thought the pan gasket was leaking at first, until I noticed it was the output shaft today.

I also attached a video showing the play in the shaft, is that normal? I have 2 2wd Cherokees and both have the same amount of play, but only one has the leak.

The last 2wd XJ I got had the same leak. Got a new $5 seal, swapped it out and all was good! The play is also normal. Super easy job to do.

Glad to hear! Thanks for the reply, I'll pick up a seal tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

The seal leaking is a symptom of a worn bushing. On the 2WD Jeep does not provide a replacement bushing. The entire tail shaft housing must be replaced. Insanity. The repair manual gives the dimensions of the bushing ID. Mine (98) was worn far beyond the maximum allowable ID. I pressed it out and tried to match it with various bushings for various vehicles. I was trying to find one with larger OD and smaller ID dimensions so I could machine it down to size. No luck. I ended up machining the ID, brazing it back up, machining it to size and channeling it for oil lubrication. It was a lot of work but the alternative was replacing seals every other year or sooner. It's been a couple years since I did the work and so far the seal is bone dry.

Well I wouldn't mind having to change it every year if I needed to after how easy it was to change... but it didn't fix the problem. It still leaks. :/

Autozone gave me the wrong part, so I pulled the seal off my other XJ and went to Oriely and got one.. but it still leaks.

So you are saying the whole tail end needs replaced most likely? Is that a easy thing to do? I have my other XJ that I don't believe leaks.. (haven't drove it in 3 years)..

I didn't realize the tail came off like that, I might try just swapping the tail from my parts XJ and see if that fixes it. If not, it seems cheap to get new bushing/seal again. The guy from this post still had leaks after new bushing/seal and said it was probably the worn yoke..
