I've done the 3.4L swap before and it is extremely easy. I did it in a 86 gmc s-15 that was started off as a 2.8 throttle body injected truck. I called a couple junk yards and bought a 3.4L long block out of a wrecked 94 firebird for 300. It dropped right in place. I hooked up all of the stock s-10 accessories and a new holley tbi from a swap meet and the little truck came to life.
I'm in the same situation as you. My stepdad gave me a 86 cherokee pioneer 2.8 4x4. The little motor in it is a dog. I have 75% of the stuff to do a Small Block Chevy swap but I think I'm going to do the 3.4 swap instead. Due to the cost of heavy duty radiator and electric fans, new exhaust, driveshafts, motor mounts, and all of the other nickle and dime things, it added up to almost $2000 in hardware to properly swap in the SBC.
As for the 3.4 swap. All you have to do is unhook all of you electrical, oil, fuel, coolant, and motor mounts and cherry pick out the old 2.8. Set the 2.8 on a crate beside the 3.4. Swap all the parts off of the 2.8 to the 3.4. Lower your much more powerful 3.4 into the engine bay, hook everything back up. Double Check all of your fluids and connections then attempt to crank it up. Set your timing then you should be ready to drive.
I would advise against using the stock 2.8 intake manifold and carb though. You can get a higher flowing one from edelbrock and a touch larger carb because the 3.4 will want more air and fuel.
But if you want more power, you could actually get by, pick up a 3.4 long block for 300-500 from a salvage yard and be ready to go.

I used the GMC s-15 throttle body fuel injection off of the 2.8 on the 3.4 I pulled from the 94 Firebird.
As for my jeep. I'm going to run an edlebrock manifold and a carburator.

Have you missed the fact that my engine has a carb and is only a 2.8l? I'm saying 20 secs is hella good for 0-60! If i'm going up any kinda hill I floor it and it still bogs down to 45ish

I can't afford to buy new intake mani and carb. My friends got a holley that's like 650 cfm that he'll give me for $20 but I need a new intake mani.... HELLO EBAY! and unless I sell something I only got $150 and I gotta buy gas soon so all of this is looking very unlikely now

I don't want to be a wet blanket at a pool party, but this is sounding like you may not be able to afford this. Whatever you do, you will spend money doing it. And whatever you spend, plan on tripling it and then you will be about right on the expense. When you do a conversion, you spend lots of money doing all the little things like wiring, throttle linkage, exhaust etc. As far as that 650 cfm carb on a 3.4, don't do it. It needs a 390 cfm and even the smallest one they make is a little too big. My 2.8L ran better than what you are describing. Put those Bosch plugs in I told you about until you can afford to do this right or you will have something that is not drivable.

4.3L XJ is spot on about the carb. I ran a 400cfm TBI on my s-15 3.4 swap and it ran great. I'm gonna run a 390-450 CFM Holley 4bb or a 2bb around the same size on my swap. I'll be able to get away with a bit larger carb if I have to because I'm also going to do some valvetrain, cam, and port/polish work on the 3.4 before I swap it in my Jeep. Good luck on the build though.

I would totaly agree keep what you have save or buy parts and bits till you have all that you think you will need and then do it... your going to spend more then you think and it sounds like you do not have it to spend. you will be part way through a swap no money pissed you can not finish and the jeep will sit and rot....
as far as doing the swap do what you wnat if you do enough reserch you can do what you wnat to your jeep but you need to make sure you have all your ducks in a row. do not just jump into things...
I have done a lot of swaps with v6's, v8..'s of all kinds 302,305,350, 454, amc 360, into yj's tj's xj's,.'s, mj's any thing can be done and it realy does not have to cost much and be done properly its just making sure you have all the parts you need.
I have said it before and will say this one again .dodge minivan rad from J/Y is cheep with fans and fits into xj and has proper hook ups for 305/350 engine.. keeps it cool no problem. anyway good luck and take your time and you will be happy
