I'll be checking it out this weekend. I read that you can measure in- and outlet temperatures of the cat to confirm if it still works. Could be a nice thing tot try.

True, but temperature in and out works better when the cat is not plugged up. After you dump the chunks, if there looks to be stable matrix left in there, you can check if there is still more heat at the back indicating it is still doing some work. I think there is a decent chance of this.

Can be a major-major trying to separate the cat without sacrificing the in/out tubes. That's why I R&R'd the cat/muffler as assemblies. The total for them both was under $150.00, though a new aft O2 sensor may be needed.
