Yup! I think so too
In fact, I think it was fixed all along once the new head gasket was in place. Only reason it ran a little hot on that first test drive was because of a few small problems that added up: (1) I didn't properly bleed the air out of the cooling system, (2) I was using too much antifreeze and not enough water by mistake, and (3) it was really really hot that day! And it the temp wasn't creeping up, it just rose a little and then stopped at about 220.
But it just occurred to me that the engine used to make a "gurgling" noise when going really hard/fast up a hill. Now, I don't hear that! At all! I thought it was intake noise but maybe it was exhaust air rushing into the cooling system..?!
DONE
FIXED
MOVING ON

I know you said you were coming down to the questa area to cabresto lake....i think it may be shut down due to fire restrictions? I'm not 100% sure what area it falls into, but there is another fire raging on about an hour away and most if that area is down. Red river, which is 15 minutes away, has all of their forests closed.....ill try and check for you sometime today

That is useful information for him Sir! Hope it doesn't mess up his plans after all this work to get it ready for the trip.

i thought so. Most all forests are closed in NM...not sure there are any options left open. There may be some areas open near the colorado border but havent checked yet.

Dont take this the wrong way but you missed 2 very important things. Old cam plus new lifters is always a gamble. You need to break them in right and it sounds like you didnt. You are supposed to hold the RPM above 1500 and vary the RPM a couple hundred for 20-30 min. This helps warm the oil up (ZDDP does nothing until the oil hits 160°) and helps lube the cam and lifters. On top of that, you are breaking in new lifters and that means they need special oil. While the oil you used has a higher then normal ZDDP content, you need even more then that with fresh lifters. It it was me, I would go get a bottle of Comp break in oil, throw it in and hope for the best.
