4.0 HO vs regular 4.0
#17
yeah, I had a dumbass moment and for some reason forgot about everything else... oh well.
as stated, HO badges where 91-96. Some (or most?) 97+ just had a badge that says "4.0 Liter" on it. I also think but am not sure, they may have raised the compression a tiny bit on the HOs too. Intake and exhaust valves are also a little different, IIRC.
99 had a different intake, and I think they changed it again in 00.
some 97-01 models had "California Emissions" which included 3 or 4 cats.
87-89 had 1 cat with no oxygen sensor in it, and only had one oxygen sensor, located on the downtube from the header.
I wonder if you could put a HO cam in a renix...

I have a '95 HO block with Renix on the outside. After driving my friend's renix, and then mine, mine has more pep.
I checked the casting numbers on the block it is a HO.

Yes, 2000-01 had coil packs.

That is the reason I asked was the cam diff. I have and 89 that I plan to do a HO head and the 99 intake with Renix/HO setup huntingman2706217 posted.
I already did a custom 98 grand alt upgrade that I was told I can not do.

i was wondering too if you could put HO parts on/in the renix block/engine. its one of the reasons i started this thread.
i wanted to understand how each engine worked and the differences, and that was going to be my next question.

Hello. I just stumbled across this and wanted to give some quick input on how to easily tell the difference between a HO and regular 4.0. I own a 93 xj 4.0 HO and a 2000 xj, which i do not believe to be an HO. The 93 HO has steel exhaust headers, while the 2000 just has a cast exhaust manifold. There are numerous internal differences as well as previously stated. While many believe the 97 and ups are still HO's without badges, i have reason to believe that, mine at least, is not due to the cast manifold instead of steel headers. (I searched and found no argument for or against this theory.... anybody have any sufficiently backed answers?)

91 and later were technically HOs. That was Chrysler's designation when they discontinued the Renix fuel injection system in the end of 1990. They had another hokey name for it in later years but no badge.

Cruiser’s HO into Renix Swap
This swap is easier than some will lead you to believe, generally those who have never done it. Those of us who have done it, like myself, will share with you the things that need to be done for a successful swap. Just think of it as swapping in a long block.
The HO and Renix have some differences but none that can’t be overcome very easily.
Any HO engine from an XJ or ZJ through 1999 can be used. One running change was that the rear of the head was no longer drilled and tapped for the temperature gauge sender beginning in the 96 model year. The sender can be relocated to the threaded hole in the thermostat housing taken from the HO engine. You’ll have to extend the wire to that location. Some brave souls even drill and tap the HO head for the sender.
You will be using the intake and exhaust manifolds from your Renix, along with all your sensors and wiring. Since the intake ports of the HO are slightly different, you use the Renix gasket. Exhaust ports are identical.
You will need to use your Renix distributor as it is different than the HO because they use different fuel management systems. The flywheel or flexplate from the Renix must be used so your CPS gets the correct signals. The valve cover from the Renix allows you to keep your CCV system intact and requires no modifications.
The HO block will have a plug in the coolant galley on the driver’s side of the block, closest to the front, which needs to be removed so your Coolant Temp Sensor can be installed in it’s place just as it is on the Renix. It requires a 5/16" square drive or a modified 3/8" drive that has been ground down to fit. Do this before installing the engine.
As for the knock sensor, which is located just above the oil pan on the driver’s side of the engine about mid way, all the blocks I’ve seen are threaded for it. If not, I’ve heard they may be drilled but not tapped. Tap the hole if that’s the case.

my old 91 cherokee with the 4.0 H.O was really fast. By far faster than my 99 running the same lift and tire size
that 91 also got better mpg than my 99
