Lifters? No biggie. I mean how loud is it really. Most 4 banngers tick. Does it sound like that? I know I know it's a straight six. Just comparing. As long as it isn't a deep knock from down low, drive the **** out of it. Heck it might be spark knock, maybe a failing CPS.

Definitely this. That is where the evap solenoid is. Its normal, ignore it.

im bumping this thread in an effort to keep from starting a new one

anyway, ive got a loud ticking sound that is breaking my heart. its most noticeable when the weather is cold (colder engine) and gets quieter as the engine warms, but is still there if your really listening.

it seems as if its coming from the lower driver side, but i cant be for sure. i have yet to try to use a piece of hose to locate where the sound is coming from. any suggestions?

also, my check engine light has been coming on and going off so i ran the codes and it came back with "P0456 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (very small leak)". what is a good place to start here and could it have anything to do with my tick?

01 Sport, 4.0 I6 with 95K on it.

sea foam treatment coming soon.

Oh god! Time for forged pistons!

Thing is there is a difference between a tick a knock a rattle and a slap to the discerning ear and each indicates a different problem area. Tick usually comes from the valvetrain a knock (not detonation) usually comes from rod bearings rattles and slap are from the top end at the piston. A consistant rattle or a consistant knock can indicate big problems on your bottom end where a tick is usually from your lifters to the valve and isn't as big a deal and much easier to fix. Slap is an interesting one. I haven't heard it too much in newer engines because the casting and forging tech has come a long way. It happens when the piston rocks in the bore and the skirt actually slaps the wall.... Each sound is distinct and sounds like it reads. Try to figure out which of these you actually have.

i agree to a point. but everyone i had look at mine said it was just a bad lifter till it got really bad one morning. now if i hear a tick the motor gets tore down. to find the problem and fix it.

Use a stethoscope. Like 5$ at harbor freight. Find out where its coming from.

well I have had to work on a customer jeep and he was complaining about a tick, that gets worse as it gets cold. could definitely tell it was coming from the top end, which leaves valve train to be suspected. there are a couple different TSBs available for these types of noises. one in particular stuck out in my head. the line boring on the block for the cam was done wrong and the cam was allowed to move back and forth hitting the timing cover which had a possible fix of putting a new cam bolt in. the other fix which is what i did to this jeep was a valve rotation. although this is mostly associated with a misfire problem it can cause a noise. the 4.0 causes so much carbon build up that the valve get large deposits and can no longer rotate the will eventually start to stick, its as simple as removing the valve cover and inspecting the tappet it should have a round wear mark on the top of it indicating the valve is spinning if it doesn't a valve rotation should be done. i believe there was also another TSB involving the distributor and how it picks up its timing causing noise. a mechanics stethoscope becomes very handy looking for these noises.
