4.5 Rustys Lift & SYE questions
Alright before you all say it, I am not the first to ask these questions and yes Im aware but it would be really helpful if someone could help. Ive been looking around and havent seen anyone else ask this question. Ive seen questions close to it but not exactly the one im looking for.
Alright I currently am rebuilding a 89 XJ, saved it from my work at our police impound where it would have been destroyed. I currently have everything rebuilt and repaired now I wanna get ride of the street stance it has and get something aggressive under it!
I plan on getting Rustys 4.5" lift package with wheels and tires but what concerns me is the transfercase... I know anything above 3'' it is good to use a SYE but Im going cheap since Ive sent alot to rebuilt the drivetrain and didnt think about it before hand. Rustys has a long travel yoke for people who dont want to shell out for a SYE.
Has anyone used the long travel yoke? and if so how well did it work? is it worth the money? Ill add in the link to the long travel yoke just so everyone knows what im talking about.

thanks everyone! and thank you COSJXFAN for moving the thread, Im still getting used to this forum! Yeah its weird, Ive talked to many individuals that have said similar things. I got a local guy whos got a 88 with 6.5'' lift with no mods to trans or yoke who says hes never had any issues. Thanks again you guys!

I have the same lift package you want and no SYE. Only have slight vibes from 40-50 mph. very livable. i have the 1" tc drop with 6 degree axle shims.

What this is is a YJ yoke. Nothing new. This is what you did before SYE and you can do it on 4.5" of lift. I have a friend that has an XJ trail rig with D60s that has been using one for about 15 years now and still going strong. But here it the trick. You cannot just go and start throwing shims and tcase spacers at it and then say "Gosh I have driveline vibes" It needs to be set up properly. I have done it, it is not hard. You will have to buy an angle finder. You won't do it without one. If you are too cheap to spend the $20 or less, then buy the SYE instead.
The pinion and tcase angle has to be within 5 degrees or less. If you are using a shackle it is already screwed up and you will need to correct that with shims. Here is a diagram of what it needs to look like.

Hey thanks, the kit comes with springs not longer shackles. are you trying to say I will need to correct the pinion angle even with springs or just when doing longer shackles? It makes sense with shackles but now you got me curious. Ive only installed two lift kits before, one on a buddies jeep and my Ram which was just blocks and spacers and i gotta say this is the first time im second guessing my abilities.
I mainly am concerned with driveshaft travel. I do agree about the angles if you dont do them right itll through everything off. I already planned on taking that into concideration during the build and during prep for an alignment. but again thank you. about your friend comment, it might just because im reading this late in the night or im really confused. what you where saying he used the YJ yoke and everything was fine with the vibes?

I got the 4.5 RC with no major vibes or problems. did a 1" TC drop and I'm fine. Don't waste your money on a bogus "long travel yoke". That won't help if you do ever get vibes anyway.
3" lift shouldn't need an sye but you might want the TC drop just to be safe.
