Default 4WD Making Awful Noise when turning sharp

When I am driving in 4WD only when I turn I hear an awful grinding noise upfront. Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be from?

Could be the tires rubbing on the LCA.
Mine does grinding in 4x4, but even if its not turning. I suspect the pinion bearings on the back of the front axle are bad.

I do rub on the LCA very slightly while making as sharpest turn possible. but that will happen in 2wd as well. This sound is much worse than when I slightly rub on extreme tight turns. I will check into the pinion bearings. thanks. any other thoughts or suggestion are welcomed.

I thought that if a hub bearing was going bad you would hear the grinding all the time. not just in 4wd and when your turning. ????

More stress on the hub bearing in a turn and under power. So it could be early failure.

Let us know what you find. Dry u-joints will make a scraping or grinding sound and they can't be greased so replacement is the only solution as well as the front unit hub bearings.

Default one more update.

I hear a slight noise all the time while driving coming from the wheels. I only hear it while driving slowly. Because when driving faster the engine is too loud to hear this slight noise. this sounds like it could be related to hub bearings but I am not sure. How would I know if my hub bearings are bad when I'm inspecting them?

I believe I'm having the same problem as you- light grinding/wobbling when turning in 2WD, and awful in 4WD.

Over the weekend I will check the aforementioned things by the guys in here, as well as a few other things. I'll keep you updated on how that goes. If I find a solution, hopefully it may be the answer to your problems as well.

Also, is your grinding in 4WD only when you turn? Mine does it regardless of if I'm turning or going straight.

And do you lose power when turning in 4WD? Before changing the U-Joints, I would lose power when attempting a turn in 4WD. I haven't been able to test how that is now since changing them a few hours ago, but I'll give you an update tomorrow.

Hopefully we can help each other figure this out.

ITS YOU U JOINTS!!! NO REALLY!!!....... if you go to www.jcwhitney.com you can find some greasable ujoint... im not talking about drive shaft ujoint... i mean the joints my the wheels. people will tell you that greasable ones are bad but think about it... you drive though DEEP water and you need to push the water out... DON'T get sealed ones. i did this to my jeep... and im SO happy i did. it fix all my 4wd grinding sounds. good luck

Sealed are stronger unless the grease fitting is in the cap.

I would vote axle ujoints too. Easy fix.
