For some applications, yes.

I prefer the versatility of the 242 in that it can be left in Fulltime and forgotten about when the road conditions change from dry to slippery.

Update: the problem is the axle shaft u-joints, and it looks like I'll need to replace both sides.

Any tips for this job? Or anything else I can do while I have everything apart?

Unit bearings might as well be done at the same time because you already have them out.

Good idea, they could use a re-packing, I don't think it's been done in a while.
What about the axle seals? Is this difficult to do?

Axle seal require removing the diff. You don't repack unit bearings. They are a sealed unit. Replace them if the are old of install them if its been done recently.
