Default 4wd question

Hey guys,

I've had 3 XJ's now... 94, 95, and my current 98. And whenever I've had them in 4wd hi, I can't turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right...It starts fighting me. What the hell is that? Is that by design?

Thanks for your input.

Yes this is normal with the 231 transfer case.. what you are feeling is the driveline binding.. not good to do. In part time 4H the front and rear axles are locked together and rotate at the same speed. So on a surface with no slip the case binds. You should really only be using part time 4H on a slippery surface, dry pavement = bad.

The 241 transfer case has full time 4H which can be used even on dry pavement.

Its a bit of a pain with the 231 case as if you live in an area within the snow belt, you have to constantly shift in and out of 4wd depending on the road conditions. It sucks pulling away from a light or something with just a small patch of snow on the ground and spinning the rear wheels (or wheel in some cases.. ).

Dude, That's exactly what I used to do...Switch back and forth!

Thanks for the clarification.

I'd get the np242 if you live in the snow belt and don't do heavy off-roading. Full-Time is extremely handy, more useful and also a lot of fun in the snow for like doing 4WD power drifts and what not!

I replaced the head gasket for the first time on my 97 and the same day put it in 4 wheel for the first time and it made that sound. I thought what now. I don't think there is anything wrong with the noise. Now my new tires prevent me from turning to the termination point anyway.

Yeah I don't have to worry about snow anymore since moving from CT to Socal, but just out of curiosity....Do you guys know how difficult it would be switching to a np242?

The nv242 case is the full time case. The nv241 is a HD case used on full size rigs and the 241OR is the Rubi case.

Also the problem with turning all the way to the right or left ( read to the steering bump stops ) when in 4wd could also be the axle u-joints binding even if he is on dirt or mud, plus, the front axle could have a LSD or a locker.

I need to adjust the bump stops more. I did it by myself I need someone turning the wheel while I am under it to get it just right.

So I have an 88 auto and it has 2 wd. Part time full time and 4 lo. When I'm in two wd it does that binding thing while turning. Also the part time light stays on. Does that mean it's not shifting out of part time or what?

Yeah, your stuck in 4WD. Adjust your linkage.

Pull the lever all the way back in 4Lo as far as it will go. Get under the vehicle and there is an adjusting bolt on the linkage. Loosen it a touch, pull the metal rod down that the bolt secures and then retighten it back up.
Should do the trick.
Mine did the same roughly a month ago and just adjusted the linkage. All is fine now. You really don't want to run in Part-Time on the road. The front tires will go bald very fast and you put unneeded extra stress on your vehicle.

Im thinking maybe a sticky for 4WD NP231/242 on the road. DON'T DO IT (Part-time on road). Read what is posted on your sun visor! Then also have a link on how to adjust the linkage.

Ok I'll do that as soon as the snow melts. Ive only had the car a few weeks. It was in 2 wd when o got it and no light. But then we got a ton of snow and I've been in 4 full time since the snow is so deep. But today I was on paved roads and tried to put it back it 2 wd and it acted like it was in part time. So I just drove it in full time. Is that bad?

Full-Time is perfect. Good thing that it isn't stuck in Part-Time.

When mine happened to me, I went from Full-Time to 2WD, and it got stuck in Part-Time. :-p.

That's pretty much what mine is doing but it goes back to full time fine. It just won't go into 2 wheel.
