Default 4X$ Options - Totally Confused

I am shopping for a lightly used Cherokee or G Cherokee. I have an eyeball on a 95 GC. The guy is telling me it has All Wheel Drive , which from what I have read is all 4wd all the time and a 4 low option. Is that correct? I am also reading that this system is called Select Trac and some places says it has the 2wd option. Which is it? I am leery of having something in 4wd all the time as I am thinking it must reduce MPGs substantially, and seems more complicated tech and parts wise so it could lead to higher repair bills down the road. Can anybody help? Thanks

Selectrac should have 2wd-4wd (full-time)-4wd (part-time)-N-4wd low

Is there a year that they made the GC with All-Wheel Drive all the time and 4 low the only other option? Thank You

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the closest they got was the NP242 with a 4wd full time option. No constant awd with a 4low.

My 96' GC was V8 powered and had full time 4X4. Only shift option was 4 low. When it was tuned and running properly it got about 18 MPG.

Most V8 ZJs came with the awd t-case, but the NP231 and NP242 were available in the ZJ. No need to worry about lower fuel mileage with the V8, it will be almost the same as the 4.0, which is not great.

Default Thanks Everybody

This is a 95. Only 112,000. Selling for $3100. I do most of my off road on the beach here in Hawaii. I don't use 4 low when we are on the sand. I am however leery of anything that is automatic or is presumed to be in 4x4. If you hit the sand and its not, you can sink like a stone and it is major bucks to be hauled out. Your pretty much on your own when that happens as any vehicle stuck in the sand is dead weight plus.

Both my CJ's with the manual hubs were the best. 4 Runner does pretty well my k1500 is a dog. Its very heavy and even with 12.5" tires on, it doesn't do well on the beach.

The vehicle is on Craigs List and from what I am getting people listing there just want to sell and get it over with. Not eager to share info or experience. So I am having a hard time getting the guy to talk to me. He seems sure that is all time 4 wheel drive though. I didn't know Cherokees had that.

The awd t-case has a viscous coupler that is troublesome, especially on pre 96 models. A 231 can be swapped very easily, but if the seller is being sketchy , I bet there are some issues.

Plenty more fish in the sea, sounds like a bad deal, screw him.

Default I Think I Will Pass

That's the best advice that I have gotten. There are a number of lower mileage options out there that are affordable. In general though. The sellers on Craigs List seem leery and not wanting to communicate. They just want to show it and sell it.

Thanks Again.
