Default 4X4 issues

Don't worry.... I tried the search function.

Anyway, I don't think my 4x4 is engaging. I got underneath it looking to find vacuum lines. It looks electronic. I don't know much about Jeeps (My first Jeep), and all I could see was some wiring coming out of the mechanism that engages the front axle.

Can someone tell me what type of engagement system I am looking at, and what could have gone wrong? Would a cable posi lock system be the best solution in the long run?

i just went out and looked at my jeep since it is the same yr and transfer as yours. In pic #2 those 2 dirty nipples that r there with nothing attached are supposed to have vac lines running to them. the higher one is supposed to have the yellow vac line on it and the lower one is supposed to have the white vac line on it.

After looking at it more closely. I have come to the conclusion that I gave up looking at it the first time prematurely.... The green vacuum hose is sheered off.

Easy fix: Go to Technical Links on this Forum. Choose XJ. Go to page 3 and read about CAD in one of the posts. Fix it once and for all in less than 1/2 hour with no new parts, using basic hand tools.

This helps a ton mines a 87 but everything looks the same. But I have a phantom 4wd light when the jeeps setting still, and when you start moving again it goes away. Transfer case isn't coming on or anything and im not engaging it tho its weird.

That means you have a 242... Not a 231... Sounds like u got wires touching or grounding somewhere...
