4x4 wont disengage right away.
i have a 99 XJ Classic, d30 front Chrysler 9.25 rear
When i put it into 4hi part time is while engage right away and then when i go to put it back in 2 it takes a couple hundred feet of driving for it to disengage and when it does.....IT MAKES A HUGE POPPING NOISE. LIKE CLUNNNNK. idk. Thoughts?

What t case do you have? And try shifting it at low speeds then put the transmission in neutral to let it roll for a few feet. I've got a 242 and that's what I do and it works every time. It'll also make it harder if you're on dry ground.

I have the same problem. I think fork pads #50 are worn out.
So, when you push lever forward, it just doesn't move synchronizer sleeve #18 far enough to disengage.
It works better, when I push lever harder/faster.

The tapping of the gas and letting off is an important part of the engaging/disengaging process.
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
