Default 4X4 wont engage any suggestions.

so i was doing a bit of offroading yesterday and i have it in 4x4 HI all the time now cause my rear drive shaft fell off so im just running the front, i stuck it in 4 low to climb a bit just to get some torque then after stuck it back 4 HI, on my way home i decided to stick it in 4 low to climb a ditch by my house and it wouldnt go into 4 hi or low, keep in mind i have no tranny fluid due to the rear drive shaft falling out. it ran pretty smooth considering their was no tranny fluid and i ran it for quite some time now without it waiting for the rear yolk to come in, their was no loud bang or ticking or anything when it stopped working. any suggestions?
