The 231 actually causes tire slip from it's binding.
I really like having a full-time 4wd option (and NOT having manual lock hubs)

Its good to just change the lever and stay there

only need part-time 4wd when off-road, and its very slippery, or rocky. F/T is no good for hardcore

I have an auto aw4, a 242 with tom woods sye, 8.25 rear with an aussie locker on 35s and it is amazing on any surface. Never had an issue with tire slip or lack of traction. Drive it like the Jeep it is and you should be fine. I will say the Aussie is quiet loud though when ratcheting but that's not even on my radar of concerns but it can be for some.

Well, I thank everybody for their input, but I think my easiest and safest option is going with a 242. I've got 8 years experience driving one and some bad experiences with rear axles so pricewise and labor time it's the safest bet. Normally I'd do it myself, but I'll be 74 next month and have medical issues that make it extremely difficult to lay on the ground underneath my jeep. My mechanic friend can find me a good case and install it in about an hour, then all I need to do is find a shift gate and bezel at the Pick&Pull. I think while I'm there, I'll grab a pair of late model Cherokee seats for my WJ. $15 each +$2 core charge. I've already got my eye on one donor. I was about to grab them when we got out first good snowfall. It's actually 60* out today but it was raining last night so the P&P is a sea of mud. I took the time today to wash the insides of the windows in BOTH jeeps!

Guess what I'm doing Christmas Eve....delivering newspapers!!! They are giving them to us at 6 PM Monday instead of 2 AM Christmas Day! That is, of course, as long as they don't have a press breakdown. They have 30 year old German color presses running on Windows XP and seem to have constant software problems.

You can actually get away with the np231 shift gate on a 242 setup. You can't go the other way around if I recall though.

I would personally get all the needed parts for a complete conversion, and put in a new trans mount too,
such that yr machine slips beautifully into the correct mode, the light displays, no reefing, cussing or guessing
Especially if you have to shift often, and are a mature gent, just nicer to have everything perfect
