8.25 Question
I've got a extra 8.25 and I was wanting to get some opinions on how they hold up being welded.
Thanks,
Johnathon

Guys not to rant here but I have typed this info in several places across this forum about how the D44, Ford 8.8, D35, and Chrysler 8.25 all compare to each other. In a nut shell:
D35 is crap throw it away.
8.25 27 spline is ok but not good for anything over a 33
8.25 29 spline is a stout unit and has advantages over the D44 such as it's 3" axle tubes. Down side is it's lack of aftermarket support. However, this support is growing and the axle can easily handle 35" tires locked.
D44 vs 8.8 There are countless thread on the internet comparing these to so feel free to go do a search as they both have there advantages and disadvantages.
My choice for a rear axle in my XJ is a D44 w/ Ford 8.8 disc brakes.
So as a note for your question, go ahead and weld up your 8.25, if something brakes you got a spare.

ford 8.8 really?? i have one of those in my backyard somewhere... anybody got first hand exp with a swap?
oh and another thing. i know how to tell the difference between all the rear axles. but what about the front. mines a 93 with an 8.25 rear..what do you guys think it came with for front more than likely a d35? that seems to be the most common combo for the years around mine.. im just wonderin. and what did d60s that people get come off of stock?

the 8.8's and Dana 44 are about the same as far as strength i don't know why a lot of people think it is so much better they will hold up to about the same tire size they both have some good upgrades if you need to and are both pretty good units. i like the 44 better because i don't have to get any additional stuff to put it on and it does not have c clips like the 8.8 does. but i am sure some body will come in and tell me different though

My 8.25 is pretty stout. If you've ever pulled a shaft on the 8.25 and 44 you've seen that they are pretty comparable.
I have some type of upgraded shaft(dunno which brand) but they are beef!
I aint worried about running 35s with my Auburn. And wouldnt waste the money on a 44 swap with what Ive got.
The 27 spline 8.25 is a little stronger than the 35 but theyre both 27 spline.
Oh, and I welded the tubes on my 29 spline 8.25. The tubes are like .250 thick! Suprised me...

Yea there is a lot of sites that makes brackets for it you just have to have a welder or know a welder. I have one in my back yard to and i is alot more work than you may think!! other than that make sure it is from a 96 + exploder with disc brakes. As for the front it is a Dan 30 Dana 44 or hardcore Dana 60's.
