I just bought this jeep so I don't know the history.

The problem is the tailights and dash lights do not work. I checked the fuse first and it was blown. When I replaced it, it just blew again as soon as it was put in. I began looking at the wiring and found that the wire going from the fuse box to the headlight switch was melted. (The wire from the headlight switch to the ignition is fine.)

The only wire coming out of the back of the fuse box is the one going to the headlight switch. I can't find the other wire that is supossed to go there anywhere.

So far I have replaced the wire from the headlight switch and put in a new inline fuse to bypass the old fuse box because the spot for the fuse was somewhat melted as well. I haven't hooked up a wire from the other side of the inline fuse because I'm not sure where to go with it. If I go directly to the tail lights don't I need to ground it? If so how do I properly ground it.

I took off the tail lights and found that the wire going to them was purple. I can't trace it but I found a purple wire running along the side of the drivers seat. Is this th right wire? This wire goes through the firewall and dissa pears into the engine compartment. I tried tracing it but lost it behind the radiator.

I'm not sure where to go from here.
