Default 88 xj stereo and speaker question

Hello,

I have an 88 jeep cherokee, I still have the original AM/FM stereo in the car, all of the speakers were going out (they were the original ones), I replaced the rear speakers a few months ago and I noticed about a month or a little more after I did the rear speakers that the stereo was starting to short out sporadically. Sometimes I would drive it and it would work, sometimes not. I noticed that if I turned the volume **** to a certain setting it would work for awhile and then it would eventually short out. Now it will hardly work at all. I am going to get a new stereo installed eventually but I am wondering if there was something I did when I installed the rear speakers that could have made the stereo short out, or it was just coincidence that over a month later the stereo just started going bad. i don't want to get a new one and because of the way I did something it screws up the new system.

Thanks!
