89 4.0L Mystery Oil Leak HELP!!
Recently I have been doing a lot of repairs to my old girl due to having both time and money to do so. My hope was to stop all her leaks, but unfortunately one oil leak still remains and I can't find the source. I have been spraying degreaser (purple power from AutoZone), and then after a minute or so shooting it with the pressure washer. I don't know if I knocked something loose or its just noticeable now that all the old dirt and oil is gone. Now the passenger side of my transmission looks like someone sprayed it with a oil(clean oil, just changed it with the RMS). The front of the inspection plate is dry, and the drivers side is dry. Anyone experienced similar, or have any ideas as to what it might be?

Main oil leaks for Cherokees are: Oil filter adapter o rings, valve cover gasket, rear main seal
Check to see if you have a stream of oil on the bottom of your oil filter. That may spray to the passenger side.

The valve cover seal could be a possibility. It has always leaked a little, but if this is it I never realized it did this much. As for the oil filter, that's not it. The oil on the side of the transmission is running down from the top, and when I parked it would be dripping from there and not just the side of the tranny.

Still could be the oil filter adapter o-rings. They only leak when the motor is running so the oil usually puddles on the trans. And drips down when you park. The o-rings only cost like $5 it's worth changing them just for piece of mind if nothing else.

Okay ill try that next. Just replaced the valve cover gasket, but still no luck so far. Next will be the oil filter O-rings. If that's not it though, where would be the next place to look?

Damn dude that thing is gooshing. I must admit it dose look a little extreme for oil filter adapter o-rings. You sure you didn't pinch the valve cover gasket? Did you use a silicon gasket or cork? If all else fails look up cruiser54 on here he is a Renix era guru and has plenty of links to useful info in his sig.

I used the Felpro silicone or rubber or whatever it is, with some RTV. I know it's not the Valve Cover, because I took a couple paper towels and wiped the back of the cover(the only place I can't see top say its dry), and the only thing I got back was a dry paper towel with some old grime.

FOUND IT!!! The tranny breather/vent line is blowing fluid out when its hot and I drive it hard(accelerating uphill at highway speeds). Turns out I accidentally overfilled it when I added a quart of fluid to it when the dipstick said it was time to add. I'll be draining some off in the morning. I'll let y'all know after I do and drive it some more.

I know, but its also a relief. I was freaking out because all this oil was showing up without any obvious source. The breather cap was dirty and nasty so I couldn't tell it was the source. On a hunch I cleaned it and boom, found my source.
