89 4.0L Mystery Oil Leak HELP!!

Model: Cherokee
Engine: 6 cylinder
From everything I could tell it WAS oil. The color matched the oil I had just put in, and it didn't smell like tranny fluid at all. What I'm thinking is that it's mostly old fluid in there, and I didn't start using synthetic til recently so not a lot of red. On that note I've been driving it around for a bit now(had to put off checking because I had to change the front output shaft seal), and it looks like the fluid has leveled off and it's not spitting anymore. Thanks for all the advice.
