Default 89 cherokee gas tank

Does the fill pipe have to be disconnected at cap to drop tank enough ro get at hoses at tank? . I got both

straps off without snapping hanger bolts. Have battery disconnected also

wires to tank disconnected . Thinking of just cutting hoses at tank , lots of

excess hose on both. Floor jack holding tank up. Its been so damn cold I

haven't been working on it. Ken

I took the bolts out of the filler at the cap when I dropped mine.. it turned out I didn't really need to. If you mean the clamp on the hose at the filler cap, unless you need more slack, it won't be necessary. You can tell by looking at it how far it has to come down to undo the bottom clamps. I only unhooked mine as I was following the steps in the manual. Wasn't near necessary.

Like kjc says, you do not meed to remove the tank to replace the pump as said in the manual. I've changed a few pumps, but I know about nothing about the filler tube.

I'm taking tank out for repair I hope. Will see when I have it out to fix or replace. I haven't started to drop tank yet making sure i don't screw things up.

Doesn't look like any slack in filler hose at all. I took the 2 bolts out next to cap.
All ready to lower with floor jack except for the 2 rubber hoses which I will cut off at tank. Will have it out tomorrow when I have some help just to be safe.

Could be up to 10 gals of gas in it yet. Was able to get 5 gal out before I lost suction or flow. Then the Suction hose stuck in tank and came apart where I had them joined together. Thanks from Ken

If I remember correctly, the filler hose has a hook thingy on the end by the fill opening so that you actually have to push it up to get it off. I dropped my tank right on to my chest when I broke the strap bolts. Lucky it was pretty well drained and I had an upside down Rubbermaid tote under part of it. Its easier to put the pump in when the tank is off. I did it both ways as I had to replace the fuel pump twice. If you put on a new lock ring, that can be a real bear with a new o-ring. Vaseline on the o-ring helps. My lock ring had thicker tabs that were really hard to get started so I ground them down a bit so that they were sharp and would go under the tank side tabs.

The fuel pump sits on a post or something like that in the tank which can be tricky to get lined up when you're doing it under the Jeep.

Good luck!

Ken, I think a little type ABC fire extinguisher is less than $40, and a darn handy thing to have around. One saved the day once for me when a Dodge van lit up with the carb. leaking. (in, under the cover).

You can still drive the ring free, remove the pump assembly, and fish a hose in through there.....1/2 tank? Boy, NOSE UP!.

Supper info 67Gmc, thanks!

What sort of repair Hoot?

I've been going through a 1/2 dozen old cars I have here. Running them and cleaning, re-parking. I've been using small, long 1/4 inch, vinyl tube to siphon all the fuel I can, before adding fresh fuel with Stabil to fire them up.

Tank was leaking after last fill-up so decided it should be fixed. Thought it was at pass. side strap but when I removed strap no sign of leak so decided to take tank off and fix or replace. Then when drivers side strap came off no sign of leak so will check tank out good. It may have been leaking at straps but until I drain tank and check it out good. May be the gasket or seal where pump is.. Tank seems to be in good shape but until I get it removed won't know for sure.

One good thing no heat in garage and will have big door open and no electrical
stuff like trouble light by it. there was a build up of rust at straps and leak could have sealed or may have enough gas removed where it doesn't or can't leak now. Hell it could have been the rubber hose leaking or spraying will replace them anyway . It been in the garage since 1st week of Nov. deer season and then the beautiful temps plus the football games have kept me from it. Now both Jeep and truck are down for repair. truck for brakes and my son will get that one done. Good idea on fire extinquisher.. Ken tank appears to be good shape ,will soon find out.

None of my Jeeps tanks have leaked. In few years here on the forum, I can't say I remember that coming up. What CAN happen is the ring/O ring not being seated correctly. Tough job. One spark and you make the news. Has to be gently positioned perfectly, in a very awkward spot.

120Lb Buck just falls down dead on the front lawn.....What is a guy to do?

X2 on the leak coming from the ring. They are hard to get on. The one fuel pump had a roundish o-ring, the other was flat but thick. If they don't go on right, it won't leak until you put more than about 1/2 tank in.

Gas tank is out , still had over 10 gals in it. Will start cleaning up strap areas tomorrow . Still moving snow with atv plow and working on snow blower. Drive chain needs replacing. We have plenty of the white stuff.

only way I got tank out was to cut the filler hose and burb hose. Will be fun to get back in. think I will lengthen hoses and shorten the metal fill and vent pipes. Ken

Here in Ca, right on the Oregon boarder, on the coast it's nuts! Heat wave in April killed some old trees. Deep freeze, (suspended 20's) in early December then killed more stuff. Now I'm on fire watch, (with no hydro power), since we are at a small fraction of our normal rain. One plum tree is budding! It's not like summer with the sun so low, but pretty "nice". This is new to me in the 33 years I've been here. The global circulation patterns are changing, buckle your seat-belts!

I'll stick with the snow, I'm hoping you are far enough away from the woods etc that is scarey. Ken
