89 Jeep Cherokee Died and Won't Restart
Hey Everyone,
I have a 89 Jeep XJ 6cyl and haven't been able to drive it for a while. About two weeks ago, I was driving down the road ~25mph and all of a sudden my engine shut off. Power still worked but that was all. I tried starting it and it would crank and crank and crank but no luck.
Thinking it was the fuel pump I decided to replace it along with some other fuel system parts including the fuel tank (it was leaking) and the fuel filter.
About a month ago I replaced all 6 of my fuel injectors because they were leaking.
And tonight, thinking it was the CPS, I replaced that too. Still, no luck.
I know it isn't the battery, because it is brand new also and measures 13.5v.
I know it isn't the starter because it isn't used while the engine is running.
Has anyone had these similar problems???
Any advice is good advice, thanks!

Do you have good fuel pressure? If you replaced the fuel pump and filter that doesn't leave too much more to go wrong getting fuel to your engine. Maybe fuel pressure regulator? Could cause it to stall and not start again.

Try this:
Renix Jeep ICU/Coil contact refreshing
The contacts between the coil and the ICU on your Renix Jeep can become corroded and loose causing a complete or intermittent no-start condition. I recommend the following procedure as a maintenance precaution to insure this is eliminated as a possible cause now and in the future.
The coil is attached to the ICU by two T20 Torx bolts. Remove these two bolts and lift the coil up off the ICU. You will see 2 pins and 2 sets of contacts. Clean both the pins and springy contact pieces with a good electronics cleaner and some fine sandpaper.
Squeeze the springy contacts closer together with some needlenose pliers. Bolt the coil back on to the ICU.
While you’re right there, unplug the connectors from the ICU and inspect the pins in the harness connector. Make sure the pins are not retracted into the connector. Spray out the connector and the receptacle of the ICU with the same good electronics cleaner you used earlier.
I feel this procedure should be performed at least once in the lifetime of a Renix Jeep.

UPDATE: So I checked my ICU and the contacts and pins have no rust and are still shiny, no signs of corrosion. I checked my fuel pressure and it is more than adequate to start the engine. I put in new spark plugs and still can't start it. I am going to try replacing fuel pressure regulator and see if that helps.
Thank you all for your posts! Hopefully I can get this figured out.

Finally gave up and took it to Chrysler last week, turns out it was the distributor. They put a new one in and a new battery since the old one was dead. Ended up spending about $400, a little pricy but at least it works now. What a relief.

Glad it's resolved! I smell something foul. By law you are entitled to your old parts back. Y'see, that Renix will run fine with all the lower wires to the cam sensor unplugged. As long as the rotor is going around and the wires are correctly on the cap it should run. Edit.....if the gears were striped that would be an issue....
Again, glad it's resolved, but it seems fishy. Knowing what they found wrong with the dizzy would sure be nice. (and pictures of that!).
