I found this on another forum . "the AW4 TC lockup was not designed to handle the torque delivered in the lower gears which is why the tranny computer doesn't lock up the TC in the lower gears." So either mine is locking up or it's not and what I'm feeling is normal? Confused now? Is there anyway to tell if it is locking when in 1st or 2nd?

Yeah if I tap the brakes I can fell it kick out but driving around say 30 mph and letting off the gas it feels like it's locked. I get that little jerk like it was a manual tranny. Write ups I have found indicate that lock up doesn't happen in 1 or 2 and that at lower speeds it should "coast" when you let off the gas.

Another thing as well is I can fell it draging on the engine when going down hills in D now my old 93 Blazer in OD would coast and pick up good speed down hills. In D it would maintain speed because the engine was doing the braking. My jeep is more or less engine braking while in what should be OD.

Well I have good news!!!
I had bought a spare TCU out of a 90' XJ a few months back when I was dealing with other Tranny issues. I walked out of work and grabbed it from under my back seat (was in my spare parts stash) reached up and unplugged the original TCU and plugged in my spare TCU and let it hang on the floor for now. I loaded up my stuff and headed for home. I noticed the change within the first two blocks. No jerk when I let off the gas at 30 MPH. No jerk when I reapplied throttle. Lets just say it is now shifting butter smooth! The whole way home 25 miles and it is driving just great! So my original TCU is bad. I'll keep it for a spare but it's now marked on the top reading TC Locked in 1 and 2. At least if need it will get a guy home.
So we have learned that a bad TCU can cause TC lock up in 1st and second gear.
Thanks everyone for the help, always much appreciated!

No kidding, I'm so relieved. I wasn't looking forward to buying more parts to hunt this issue down. Feeling pretty good right now but that could be the beer. LOL

LOL just finished up a mini keg of home brew. This last batch was really high on the alcohol content. Just about 12%. I need to do that again. Great Friday night batch for sure!
