89 xj gettin too hot
New to this forum. Have an 89 xj and I just went through the cooling system...new 2 or 3 row radiator (had mech. order it) fan clutch is good still, wired fact. elect. fan to toggle, new 180 thermostat, new water pump. the jeep runs fine and runs between 190 and 200 most of the time ..in the heat of the day when the a/c is going it gets hot... 135 ish while in town and at lights so I flip on the aux. elect. fan or turn off the air....I'm looking at replacing the mech. fan with a full size electric fan kit....what brand or kit would yall recommend.?? thanks.

thanks...will check out some wreckn yards and see what I can come up with. Did you wire into the existing power that the small aux. fan is on or set the twins on different thermostat?

Shouldn't the efan come on when the a/c is on? Without the shroud, air flow thru the rad is seriously reduced. Unless u have replaced the fan clutch with a new one recently, I would suspect the fan clutch also. Our old fan clutch seemed fine....................replaced it anyway and what a difference.

Are you still running the stock closed loop system? If so your overflow/fill point bottle could be cracked or the cap could not be sealing all the way. if so you will have over heating problems. Also the old style T-stat housings were pretty restrictive. You can open them up some or upgrade to the newer style (not sure what year, sorry).

89 Overheating
I have an 89 Cherokee 4.0L and at one time I had overheating problems. Why?
First, my fan shoud was cracked and I ripped it out. (Very bad idea, the fan shroud is essential).
Second, I read a post saying removing the mechanical fan and installing an electric fan was the greatest thing since sex. So I switched in an electric fan. Well, the electric fan died at some point and as I was driving up to Sequoia I overheated. I called Flex-A-Lite and spoke to their tech guy. He told me "put a new mechanical fan and clutch back in. Don't use an electic fan in place of the mechanical fan on a Cherokee!"
Third, I put a new fan shroud, mechanincal fan and clutch, hood vents from "RaceAce.com", and 3 row radiator from DPG. No problems overheating since and going on 6 years.
Oh yeah, I also upgraded the heater valves since I took out the closed system bottle with an open syst bottle, put in the new style thermostat housing, 180 deg thrmostat, and two prong radiator temp switch from Jeg's.
