90 4.0 limited wont shift out of 2nd gear?
Does anyone know what it could be? These are new to me..just bought this..put a rear hatch and bumper on it..test drove it..it wont shift..starts in 2nd gear
it does have the power/econo swithch on the dash. has 2wd fulltime/parttime and low case in it..
103,000 orignal miles
locker diffs...power everything..even mirrors..and passenger seat is power leather..
i would like to fix it..but may have to part it out soon due to lack of funds..

Hi
It sound like you have a NSS (Think that is what it is called) problem as it should only start in N or P not 2nd! Someone with more knowledge than me will be along to helps shortly, I would recommend doing an oil & filter change as probably old and not helping matters. Pull the dip stick for the box out and smell it if not sweet smelling and pink change it.

it has tons of power..just wont shift..I am thinking it was on the side of the road with this problem, then got hit in the rear end..
I just dont know what way to go..fix it or part it out?

no when you start it up in park...and then put it in drive...it starts moving in 2nd gear...,you shift it manual into 1st and it wont go in 1st.
it is in 2nd and stays there..wont shift into 3rd at all.

There is a fuse for the tranny behind the passenger side knee panel. It controls the trans computer. That's the first thing I would check. Usually you can manual shift through all the gears, but you say its just stuck in 2nd. Wont hurt to check.

i used to have a 94 Chevy pick up. it did this once. the fuse for the instrument panel went out. the genius minds at GM added a second function to this circuit. when the fuse goes out you only have park, neutral, reverse, and second gear. people used to pull the dash fuse to keep their odometer from accumulating miles (hee hee). after a few years of this GM added the "2nd function". didn't matter though, people figured out other ways to do it. since you didn't mention anything else not working this might not help.....but it wouldn't hurt to check all of the fuses under the dash and the ones under the hood. who knows what they have on the same circuit.

I am so glad the little "le car" are no more and the 3 lug nuts that they had...anyone remember those junk little things...
you dont see them..they are all gone....thats great..I use to put tires on them when they were new..

While some of the parts and controls may be RENIX, the trans isn't. Its an Aisin Warner AW4 made in Japan and used in some Toyotas. Its electronic controls are seperate from the engine controls. There is a TPS on the throttle body, and it is adjustable on the RENIX models. There is also a VSS on the tailshaft of the trans, and the brake pedal switch affects lockup of the torque converter. There is a kickdown cable attached to the throttle body shaft in addition to the throttle linkage and cruise control. The comfort/power switch was deleted in 1992 or so, and it is recommended that it stay in the power setting.
The NSS can be cleaned and may or may not be your problem. There are 3 solenids in the trans, S1 and S2 are shift solenoids and S3 is for the lockup.
