Cruiser that exspression was me having a revelation not aimed at you.
I appreciate you and freegdr for your help. I pulled my insterment cluster so I could access the leads to the headlight switch. I turned on the headlights and have no power coming out of the switch to the orange with black tracer. What should I try next?

i had this issue and it turned out the wire going to the license plate light was touching the metal on the hatch and arching the circuit. It could be any wires going to the dash lights (not likely) or going to the taillights. Either way you'll have to narrow it down by checking the circuit in the wires going to each light.

I tested the circuit at the switch terminal and the back of the connector.
Im thinking of taking the new switch back and trying another , if that does'nt work then I'll have to start checking the wires like stihiggs suggested

I have the same issue in my 90 xj, Except the lights work, just don't dim... and the clock/tranny switch/rear wiper switch lights are out.... If I hit the dash board they might flash on for a split second...

Well I just picked up another new switch and still have the same issue, I even pulled the 5 amp fuse to make sure nothing in the circuit after the switch was causeing the issue still no power coming out of the switch to the orange with black tracer. I didn't think it was the switch because I had already tried replaceing it, but it was worth a try. Im going to try going over the connections and relays in the engine compartment because it seams like the problem started after I cleaned and dielectric greased the connections.

Well still trying to chase down this electical gremlin. I removed rear cover in back disconected all lines going to rear lights , still no change I cleaned them up and reconected them, then I took apart front marker lights everything looks good. I went back to the headlight switch and checked the red wires with blue stripe they partially melted the connector and are reading 10.5 volts, the diagram says they go to the park fuse and audio alarm. Where would these be located?

Well here's an update, I spent about twelve hours going through all of the wireing and connections to all of the lights and still could not get them to work through the headlight switch, I even pulled the factory switch out of my sons 90 cherokee and it acted the same way. If I jumped power to them seperately they would work, so out of frustration with this jeeps wireing I cut the wires to both the tail, marker lights and the dash lights and ran them through a 15 amp fuse and jumped them into the terminal that feeds the headlights, now all lights come on when headlights are turned on, problem solved
