91 chk, brake issue abs?
So I just got a heck of a deal on a 91 CHK. Problem is it hasn't been tagged since 2013 and it has just been sitting... in Oregon....So lots of moisture and whatever else. This is my first Jeep so I really know nothing about them...
So my problem is this...My check ABS light was on constantly...I checked the brake fluid and couldn't really tell how much if any is inside as I couldnt get the top off to get a good look. So I did put some in but didn't want to overfill it so I may not actually have a lot in there. When I press on the brake pedal it sounds like a pump is engaging. Also when I have my foot pressed down on the pedal and start the car I can feel the pedal clicking. Is this a sensor or are my brakes all shot possibly?
Also as a side note, as I know nothing about jeeps....Any recommendations on what I should do to tune this thing up as its just been sitting for several years? Brands of good plugs/wires/distrib cap?
Thanks guys!!

Second, you say you couldn't get the top off to look inside, then you put some in anyway? Did you get it open? Get a damp rag and wipe off the side of the brake fluid reservoir and there are a couple of dots. The fluid level should be between the dots.
Third, the abs system works with the main braking system but the brakes will still work normally in most cases even when the abs quits. You could have a bad abs pump, sensor etc. you just have remember you don't have abs to enhance panic stops.
Fourth, you have mentioned you know nothing about Jeeps and the comments about brake fluid worry me a little. If you are new to self repair it would be a good idea to have the brakes looked at by a good mechanic. Brakes are a major safety system, you literally have your life depending on proper function. My advice is pay for this one, then start learning to do your own wrenching. Start with an oil change and move up from there...

Now that's good news if that recall hasn't been addressed before now. You can get the dealer to check the codes and verify the recall. Although I think we all agree that the dealer is usually not cost effective for normal repairs. You might want to have a different shop look over the brakes and make sure you are all good. Nice call out by bustedback on the recall.

Thanks for the advice! All of a sudden tonight after I ran the jeep about 1/2 mile and stopped and turned off the vehicle it sounded like it was making a bunch of chirping noises which I assume are the vacuum lines for the brakes. I'm taking it into town Thursday. Hopefully its safe enough to get there lol

Don't ever add brake fluid to a low reservoir. The reason it's low is the pads, rotors and drums are worn. I suggest a complete brake overhaul, and bleed out all the old fluid. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and retains water over time. Old fluid should be flushed out, especially if you just got it. I'll also suggest here that you do ALL your basic maintenance now, replace all fluids, tune up, filters, and a good thorough inspection of the driveline and suspension.
