92 Cherokee stalls after being put into 4 low and runs funny.
My friend got a 92 Cherokee last night and it ran fine until he put it in 4 low. It engaged but after he gave it some gas it stalled once he let off the throttle. He put it back into 2wd and it seems to be alright when it accelerates but whenever he lets off the throttle it makes a weird noise and the rpms fluctuates and almost stalls. Could it be something wrong with the transfer case lever not being adjusted properly and it's still engaged in 4wd somehow? If there's anything else you guys can think of that we should look at please let me know, I just want to get a head start as to where to look. Thanks!

Motor mounts, trans mounts are suspect. Take a gander at them. Inspect the transfer case linkage while you're under there.
ever checked the transfer case fluid level and condition?

Looks like the transmission mount is shot. We found out that every time it's in 4wd (hi and lo) it grinds. He didn't have the right socket size to remove the bolts to the transfer case so we haven't inspected the fluid yet but plan on doing it this weekend. Since it only grinds in 4wd does that mean the transfer case is most likely bad?

Remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug. Should be able to stick your finger into the fill hole and feel the fluid level.

If the engine moving around due to bad mounts is making it stall, have a good look at the wiring harness where is goes between the block and the firewall. All the extra flexing can break the wires

Alright so we found out at least one issue. The two top bellhousing bolts backed out and the one close to the starter is also gone. It seems like the engine and bellhousing alignment is off just by a little bit so I can't fit the bolt in. What's the best/easiest way to get those aligned?

Yeah, that might do it too! The alignment pins should line everything up once you have the bolts and the trans pushed flat up against the block. You might need to gently jack under the front of the trans or engine to get things to line up again. (That is the face of the bellhousing parallel to the engine block.)
