I just replaced my idler pulley and serpentine belt and while I was in there I got to know the power steering pump pretty well.

So, I was thinking it wouldn't be that difficult to just replace the damn thing since it's giving me so much trouble (looseness/squeaking) even though I flushed it and filled it with clean fluid.

I see here in this excellent thread that there's a swap for "'96+".

Can anyone tell me if there is anything a little better that I can swap for my 93 pump? Welding isn't one of my options. It would have to fit exactly or fit with some grinding or cutting.

Hey, I just noticed that all the power steering pumps on Amazon are "remanufactured" or "refurbished".

What would it take to refurbish my own power steering pump myself? Is that possible at home, without a machine shop?

 

Replacing the seals is fairly straightforward, but if the input shaft and bearing/bushing (not sure which the Jeep pump has) is worn, you're better off cost-wise getting a bolt-in replacement.
What normally happens is the input shaft gets chewed up. Then you get squeaking and leaking. I don't believe a rebuild kit with hard parts is available.

FWIW, most of those "remanufactured" pumps have new seals and a fresh coat of paint. Few to none have renewed hard parts.
If the original failure was merely a seal, they'll work fine. If the mechanicals were worn...you can bet they still are. It's really a crapshoot.

It looks like for this old Jeep I should try to find a new replacement if I can find one. Anyone know if any other cars'/trucks' pump might fit?

 

A guy in my club said that he put a WJ pump in his XJ,direct bolt in for a '96 up.

 

The only difference between the 93 and 96+ XJ pump is the mounting holes, the internals are the same.
