93 XJ fuel pump/ Switching gears problems..
93 Jeep Cherokee Sport Inline-6 Manual Transmission 5-speed with a 98 rebuilt engine installed (the original seized) Its been in Alaska, Southern California, Florida, and also shipped it to Spain . So you can imagine the snow, salt, water damage... Trying to revive it though. To the Topic;
Fuel pump, Heres my problem,
Installed new parts. Fuel pump didnt wanna go back into the fuel tank. Me and a buddy rigged the locking ring in place with a hammer and a flat head. Took both of us to hold it in place. In order to put the lock ring back on it must be flat and snug. (shouldn't it go in easy though?) After we got it in place it didn't seem right, it's not flat like its supposed to be. I turned the key, filled with gasoline, then it leaked about $5 of gas within minutes. Now I have it held together with duct tape for a temp fix to keep the gasoline from spewing out. Should I replace lock ring or gas tank? I need some expert advice on this lol.
- Shifting;
Grinding into gears
Shifting into reverse especially. Grinds REALLY loud even scares people near me in parking lots. Also have to damn near fight it into first gear. My friend suggest syncros need replacing. Any Ideas, suggestions would help n u would be my hero.

In regard to the first topic. Did you remember to put the big o ring in between the lock ring and the tank? I smear the o ring with petroleum jelly and it makes this a lot easier. If you did remember the o ring and the lock ring felt tight you may have misaligned the o ring with its grove. The jelly also helps hold the ring in place during install. If you feel the salt has really hammerd the tank that badly your looking at about 160$.
As for the transmission issue I would say that most likely its a clutch issue. First and reverse do not share syncros. If one or the other was bad I would agree. You are going to need to inspect your clutch slave cylinder. The clutch slave cylinder uses brake fluid (hydraulically) to disengage the clutch. If your clutch is not properly disengaged than you will just grind the hell out of first and reverse.
Try this. On level ground put the jeep in first gear with the clutch engaged. Now start the jeep with the clutch still engaged. If the jeep tries to move with the pedal all the way down than your clutch is not properly disengaging.
Hope this helps
