Default 94 xj, steering gear box: rebuild, second handed, reman ?

hey,

94 xj, steering gear box started leaking quite a bit in last few days.
i see a rebuild kit for around 35$ at oreilly
second handed probably could get one for around 75$ (hope that doesnt leak or how long that will last)
remanufactored 158$ including core charge

what to do ?

is it worth the money and time to rebuild it

from what i can see it seems to come out the seal where the pitman arm meets the gearbox, no such thing as an easy fix right ?
i tackled a lot of leaks on a jeep and gearbox is new to me

If the only problem is the leak at the pitman shaft, then get a
seal kit and you should be able to fix the leak. Try rockauto.com
for seal kits under $10. You can rent a pitman arm puller at
your local store.

I used one from
The steering store
http://www.buy-steering.com/

After a year the steering is still tight as my new Jeep. Your steering box if leaking is probably worn in other spots also. These guys are pros not like the junk from a parts store and at a similar price. Got it in a couple of days.

thank you for that link that is indeed similar price, it is tempting to buy just another one that is ready to go in.

well i clearly made a misdiagnosis it had been a while and ive just been cleaning the oil each time. it wasnt the gearbox it was the power steering pump fill cap that didnt seal properly it would just untwist and come off but after cleaning it really good with toothbrush inside the cap and spring and seal it seals perfectly now and now each time i open the cap i can feel the vacuum and hear a vacuum pop when i pull the cap.

ive been so busy working on other parts just didnt see this easy fix and it dripped right on the gearbox and looking from underneath only is not really the way to diagnos a problem.

wish each leak was this easy thanks for the suggested links and replies.

If you're generally happy with the function of yours (prior to the leaks in it)... then hands down, I'd rebuild it yourself with a kit.
I can tell you I'd NEVER go down the road of a quote/unquote reman. unit. They are all 90%+ complete crap. They don't rebuild them like they are supposed to... trust me.
ask me how I know.
just google it, you'll see just how bad the primary rebuild facility in the US is. They crank out nothing but garbage. If anyone ever starts a class action against them I'll be the first one to sign the petition.

My experience is the "life-time warranty" parts from the box stores are junk. I've replaced 6 PS pumps and 3 steering boxes. Parts that started leaking prematurely or were faulty in operation.

I suggest that you spend the extra money and buy from the specialty stores recommended by forum members. Yes, the price is steep. But how many hours under the hood are you willing to spend to replace the same part over and over again?
