95 XJ spits and sputters
95 XJ Sport runs great most of the time. Occasionally it will spit and sputter and back fire through intake at any throttle position above idle. Acts like it has water in fuel. Drained tank and put in fresh fuel and same thing. Anyone have any ideas?

Here are a few things to check, low hanging fruit that may be involved. Good luck and keep us update!
1. Any check engine light? If so, check the code through the OBD1 method and post the two digit here for comment.
2. Ensure tuneup hardware is fresh. Cap, rotor, plugs, (Champion copper to .035) quality plug wires.
3. When was the last time your fuel filter was changed? Very inexpensive and super easy to do on your 95, (right along fuel rail, drivers side)
4. Test fuel pressure and compare to factory spec. Parts store can rent you a gauge inexpensively. For a 95 you should have around 31 psi at idle, then disconnect the vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator and the pressure should jump to approximately 39 psi. If there is any raw fuel in that vacuum line, replace the fuel pressure regulator as it likely has a ruptured diaphragm.
