96 Cherokee auto tranny problems
Couldn't find my problem in search so here goes, got a 96 that we just brought back to life, was stalling before but fixed that now the problem is putting it in drive or reverse now. It will either spin freely or it takes a second of jogging the shifter to get it going. I make sure tranny fluid is good before every drive, and have no leaks. Trans has about 245k. No check engine light, but my 4x4 is disconnected from handle inside because when we jacked up tranny the stabilizer pin(?) on the select trac fell out of the bracket and its not so easy to get back in. I also haven't flushed the transmission and changed filter because its so old I'm afraid buildup will get in all those pinholes in the tranny and fry it.
Any ideas?

I got the same problem, I expect the transmission oil filter to be the case.I went to the shop to buy a new filter and dextronIII. Tomorrow I'll get my finger dirty on the change, hope I don't break off any bolts...My jeep is from '95/96 as well and drove last few month everyday through the heavy flooding...water is still in the head lights
Will post if the troubles disappear after changing the fluid and filter...

Yeah its almost like the trans is slipping but once it connects into drive or reverse its perfect. Im putting that selec trac holding pin in tomorrow and checking bolts on the trans thinking maybe its a little loosely connected or something. Im not changing my filter and fluid until I can use that cleaner/hookup thing to basically pressure wash my trans out. Saw too many problems after changing old fluid and filter, those holes it runs through are like pencil lead sized and easily clog up after new fluid flushes gunk in there. Not saying don't do it but changing the tranny fluid and filter sometimes can ruin or make a trans run worse. Whatever I find out tomorrow i'll post too

Sorry to keep you waiting for the outstanding result, I managed to get the filter and oil changed It took me way longer to crack the pan seal then expected and didn't want to force it, sure the neighborhood got on update on my vocabulary anyway... Driving now for two weeks now without problems, the old filter was full of dirt, so far no problems ... looking closely to the filter i guess you can wash the filter as well, ...I dont go for the flush, I rather change my oil again coming weekend, that should be an easy one
