Default 96 GC 4.0 into a 2000 XJ?

Nubie

96 Grand Cherokee motor is good to go for my 2000 XJ?

thanks

.XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)...

The complete engine will work, although you have to make brackets to hold the coil pack in place do to the lack of mounting holes in the head. Actually you're better off without that 0331 head. Use all your 2000 manifolds, sensors, and accessories.

The exhaust ports on the 0331 head are smaller.
I have read that some people have had exhaust leaks when trying to mate the
'00 exhaust manifolds to the older heads.
Appears some people have not.
I think this is what might solve that problem.

Sounds like it would be a good time to add a "header". It's old enough that it doesn't have to have a cat.
What are you folks running for headers?

thanks!

Just out of curiosity is your '00 a CA Emissions or Federal Emissions one?

It is one or other. Cats are different for CA and NY but it is still a CA Emissions vehicle.
So I guess that is what you are saying.
You have the dual precats, the one rear cat, and 4 O2 sensors?

If you a registering it in the US, it has to have a cat if it's built after 1968 or 1988 if it's a truck. That's a Federal mandate.

The exhaust adapter is a good thing.

Are you talking just Clifornia/CARB? Because there is no way I am retrofitting a CAT onto my 1972 Charger.

BTW, my 1986 Dakota came with a CAT and it was delivered to and purchased in TN.

Not sure what you mean by this. In MO after a vehicle is 25 years old it doesn't require emissions testing

There is an EPA exhaust clarification from 1990 that if the engine OR the chassis came with a CAT, it is required to retain the CAT for federal compliance.

Yes, FED.
At any rate I'm thinking header instead of any manifold adapter

Well this is a good thing and why I was curious.
So I wonder if you could put a '99 down XJ exhaust on that.
Right now you have the 2 piece exhaust manifolds, the y pipe with no cats, the intermediate pipe, rear cat, muffler, and tail pipe.
You have an O2 sensor at the bottom of the Y pipe and one behind the cat.
Now I know you are out of emissions but it would still be nice to not have a CEL on.
The wiring for the O2 sensors might be long enough to reach where they would have to.
So you can use the head on the GC motor, buy the appropriate header for the head and an XJ and will have to figure out the rest from there.
Will still have to figure out a coil bar mount and swap over to the distributor-less set up.
This is all theory on my part.

I'll pick up the adapter "just in case" but may go with an aftermarket stainless header too.

What's your experience with quality fit, performance, et?

Also,
won't adding the header for a 1996 eliminate the need for the adapter?
