Had the same issue with my old 91 sport. Baffles in the gas tank were shot. every time I took a sharp right with less than a half tank it would sputter and almost die

if it is indeed the baffles then yeah tank will need replacement.... would also be a good idea to do the pump assy. at this time and the filter... if they are so rotted out that they arent doing their job I can only imagine the sediment that has built up in the filter. its not going to be a cheap job but other than rusty bolts its a pretty easy job... had you not mentioned that it only happens when the fuel light is on I would suspect a loose connector or broken wire somewhere

Some tanks have a reservoir around the pump pickup to prevent that, I'm not sure if yours does.
The no-cost fix is to not run the fuel down that low. Your fuel pump will live longer too. You could replace the tank and the pump assembly and end up with the same problem, they really weren't designed to be driven much with the fuel light on.

i'm with RADI. if its only happening when you are low on fuel. dont go low on fuel. chances are the tank is fried. pulling the pump out isn't to hard to do, you can probably do it with the tank in the car as it sits on an angle in the front of the tank. crawl under there and take a peak. it may be just as easy to drop the tank as well. once the pump is out you can inspect inside the tank for anything that has broken off inside. pay attention to which way the pump is sitting/clocked before you remove it and be sure to re install it in the same direction.
