Default 96 t case np231 interchangeably

My 96 xj t case np231 went out due to no atf. My step brother took the initiative and found another np231 for cheep used. We noticed the back where the drive line connects is a little different but the drive line slid right on so I bolted the new t case on but noticed the electrical plug in the back is different. Closer look seems like the new t case is obd1 since my wires continue to the o2 sensor in the catalytic converter and the new one ends at the rear sensor in the t case. My plug is 3 wires and the old one is 2, all wires are different colors. Any way I can make the older t case worker for me? Thanks

Unbolt them and switch them over.

That was my initial thought so I unbolted the broken one and thiers a big chain around a sprocket I couldn't get off and that's all way over my head. Have you done this before? I couldn't find any other threads or videos on changing this rear output dealyo from the transfer case

It is just a plastic gear underneath for the speedometer, it should pop right out once you take the bolt and retainer out.

From the pictures, it looks like the OP is trying to swap the output shaft tail covers.
(If you look at the first pic, the bolts are removed)
That is the chain he's talking about.
What are evryone's thoughts?

*update* appears the speed sensor isn't interchangeable, I had the good t case bolted up already so on my days off I threw it all together and it works good... except the speedometer of course, also noticed in 4hi and 4 lo lights don't light up but both work great. Decided just to drive it as is until I can afford to get np 231 with proper "rear output housing" unless anyone has workaround? Thanks for the feedback, happy to be driving my jeep again!!

Assuming you swapped the speedo sensor over, it can be rotated to 4 different positions to accommodate different gear sizes. You might just need to rotate it to get it to engage.

thanks so much, I have not swapped the speed sensors. They appear to not be interchangeable as the newer one bolts on with a flange and the older one connects with a relatively big nut. I know the older one has a similar looking flange as the new one but they are way different in size and doesn't appear to be close to interchangeable. If theirs a way to make it work would be awesome!

Removed the bolt on the bracket holding the lower half of the speed sensor in and removed the whole assembly. It should transfer over to the current case.

The OP stated the transfer case was ruined by no oil....Typically, how low on oil can these run before they get damaged..... I checked the one on my recent acquisition & it only had 1/2 quart in it...I drained it & refilled it with approx 2 quarts....Its not on the road yet to test drive it.....I guess its been this low for a very long time as theres no signs of a fresh oil leak..............
