96 XJ (country) shuts off, but will start back up, getting worse.

I don't think it's your CPS, you already replaced it with no change. From what you've posted so far it looks like either PCM or wiring between PCM and Coil. (given the limitations of not actually seeing it, lol)

do a fuel pressure check, first thing i would do is change the fuel filter. it sounds like ur loosing fuel pressure. if u have to pump the gas id say that it probably has something to do with fuel. try holding the petal all the wat to the floor while cranking it, this cuts off fuel completely, running to rich could be the cause as well. if it starts with the pedal all the way to the floor id say too much fuel. just do all the basic tune up stuff and see what that does

How much of this thread did you read? Fueling is not the issue. "all the basic tune up stuff" has been done. I know you're trying to help, but dang man. Read a little.

Well i replaced the CKS and coil yesterday and the issue ki.d of got worse. So today i thought it had to be a wiring issue so i wiggled the connector on the pcm and it died. So i took it out and opened it and blew air through to get the dust and rust particles out. Dielectric grease the connectors. Also opened the connectors and cleaned them. And put shorter screws in the pcm. Zero issues on the way home. I did notice after all that, that it seems to run and shift better. Well time will tell now.

So I think it's official. Opening up the connectors at the pcm all the way down to the pins, blowing the dust off and packing them with dielectric grease. And also opened up the pcm and cleaned it out, put shorter screws in it and rust proofed it. After all that it runs better and I haven't had an issue since.

With all the new parts and still the same problem, it's starting to sound more like something between the parts - i.e. broken/shorted wire somewhere. Since you've tried so much else already, might as well test the wires for continuity. Some of it you've already verified by checking voltage, but I'd check things like the wire from coil to dist. and any of the associated grounds. And maybe check all the wire harness connectors on the PCM and coil and stuff to make sure they are clean and connecting securely.

I remember the wiring and connectors in my 96 were all dusty and old enough that some were getting corroded/brittle.

also, after reading back over what you said about the spark check, you found there was none on the output from the coil to the distributor. You've also tested and found spark on the wire leading into the coil. It sounds like that's where the breakdown is maybe? I realize it's a brand new coil, but what if it has a defect and is failed just like the one it was supposed to replace? You could try getting a different new one or one from a friend's jeep that is known to work. I'm not sure if you can test a coil for failure?

Just tryin to help!

PotatoWalker-
I thought about the ignition coil being bad but I tested it and the old one and they are both fine and identical. Ive got something screwy going on for sure and its gotta be something so simple. I'll be doing continuity checks on all my wiring and I'll just see where it goes from there. I really appreciate you and everyone else taking your spare time to read this novel of a thread. I'll be Jeepin' again soon.

Have you replaced the cps? My 96 country did the same exact thing. You should have seen the hoops I jumped through. It was the cps.

!!FIXED!!
It was something simple. I'm not a pro with distributors. I thought that since there was no spark to the distributor, there wasn't a need to consider it as a problem yet. Well, it turns out that the pick up coil in the distributor sends a signal to the pcm that tells it when to spark up the ignition coil. So I replaced the pick up coil in the distributor and it fired right up. Its running smooth now.

Thanks for all your help and input. It was definitely a fun ride and I'm going to pay it forward help someone like you guys helped me. Thanks again.

Glad you figured it out! I've never messed with distributors other than a tune-up so I'm useless there. The fun part about the Lifetime Jeep Replacement Program in my mind is that the jeep is getting constantly improved. Plus half the time I don't have to figure out what I'm gonna do to it next... it seems to have it's own way of deciding that for me.
