'96 XJ No Ignition Start - but remote works!
Hi all,
Looking for some troubleshooting advice, before I start thinking too far outside the box
Lately we have been having a few days of sub-zero weather overnight. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem, may be pure coincidence.
When I try to start the ignition in the morning, it is a NO-GO. All lights and accessories come on, but when I turn the key a step further there is no attempt at a start. Yet, if I use my remote start it will get going...I can then activate the vehicle by turning the key to on and pressing the brake. But after that there is still no help at the ignition switch...remote start only.
This has been happening on and off for about a week and a half, and this morning my Check-Engine light came on.
Sound like an ignition switch issue...or maybe another common problem I'm not too familiar with?
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

NSS
I was afraid that might come up....
Cleaned and reinstalled it last summer after my reverse lights went out. I guess that would affect it due to it not reading where the transmission is sitting at the moment...therefore no start because it doesn't think it's parked?
If that was the case, and this may be a stupid question, why would the remote start still work? Not too familiar with how the remote works as its my first vehicle with it.
Thank you.

I think you're on the right track.
Last week I had to replace my headlight switch and removed the kick panel (knee guard) in order to do so. A couple times I had to engage the key, move the shifter out of park, and then put it back in order to remove and install the panel piece. Thinking this may have causes an issue with the NSS as the vehicle was never started, I just shifted it when I needed it out of the way. Hmmm......

Not the result I wanted, but a result none the less
It is the NSS. Went out last night and adjusted it in between starts and adjusting the shifter. It is definitely not sitting where it should be, so I'm going to take it off this weekend and give it a good cleaning until I can justify paying $300 for another one.
On another note, the check engine light went off after I adjusted it, guess it's fixed
