Default 97 4.0 starts then dies

I put my 97 Cherokee in the ditch a couple days ago and left it running whole waiting for a tow truck. It ran for awhile and then the radio shut off and all the electronics died and it shut off. The tow truck pulled me out and jumped it and it died down the road so he towed it too my house. I took the alternator off and took it too auto zone and they tested it 5 times and it passed every time. They tested my battery and it was junk. So I got a battery from a friend I know is good threw it in and it started right up. I let it run for awhile to make sure the alternator was charging and then about 45 minutes later it died. It wouldn't start the rest of the night but when I went out today it started right up and died 5 seconds later. There is some snow packed in places so I'm going to push it in the garage and fire up the torpedo heater and then check to make sure all the sensors are plugged in still.
Recently did cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and cold air intake (junk will be removing soon).
I need some help to get my jeep runnin again

Careful with that ether, spray gas in instead. Ether really does a number on your pistons

Check your crank shaft position sensor. There's a bunch of write ups on here about it sounds to me like yours is starting to go.

I had the same problem with mine it sounds like, my jeep would run fine up until the engine was warmed up. Checked around on the forums and i found out it was the coolant temperature sensor. If you think about it, you would think all the coolant temperature sensor did was something with the coolant. Nope, it tells your CPU the fuel to air mixture when the engine is hot. Try replacing the coolant temperature sensor, if it doesn't work i'm sure you can always return it. Good luck!

Test your way to a solution here............

IF it only runs when you introduce gas or starting fluid, then you have identified a "fuel delivery" problem. You need approximately 49 psi of fuel pressure for your engine to start and run. You can (and should) verify this with a fuel pressure gauge connected to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Many parts stores will rent you this tool inexpensively if you don't have access to one.

As for your charging system, pretty easy to do a quick and dirty check on it with a meter (everyone that works on their XJ needs a meter). All you need to do is to put the meter on DC volts, put one lead on each of the battery cables. With a healthy system, you should see approximately 13.5 to 14.0 volts.

Good luck.
