97-99 cylinder head question
Does anyone know if a cylinder head from a 97-99 will work on an 01? I don't see why they wouldn't but I'd like to get some clarification. I can get a good deal from a guy local and need to know asap
Thanks
Thanks

The 97-99 head will work, however there will not be any way the secure the coil rail without fabbing up some brackets.

It will bolt on and work, but you'll have to come up with some way to mount your coil rail. The 2000 and later 4.0 heads have threaded holes where the coil rail bolts up.
FYI, you can get a brand new, beefier casting with brand new valves from Clearwater Cylinder Heads and it has the threaded holes for the coil rail. I ordered one for my 2000 XJ and bolted it on a couple of weeks ago. It was $440 delivered to my door. Hard to find a better deal.

So BB Oroiville is likely not a "smog-control district". (Forum, some areas need to smog every two years in CA, others just smog once after buying)
So...can anyone chime in on putting the pre 2000 sensors on post 2000 manifolds, and passing smog? Just the one forward 02 sensor, ...then the rest. TPS needs to be right. MAP sweep might be the same..Idk !

There is a smog check program in Oroville and my Jeep passed with flying colors. The only sensor in the intake is the IAT sensor, and I moved mine to the air cleaner.

So I guess to "read between the lines", you are saying the earlier TB bolts up to the later manifold. That's helpfull. I'm surprised Oroiville is in a smog control district! Live and learn..Both my Sonoma Co. place and up here are not, just the one time smog.

It's not an enhanced area, but we still have to smog every other year.

0331 and 0630 major differences (aside from Go Go Gadget Coolant Leak) are exhaust port size and coil rail mounting. The coil rail is easy but the exhaust poses a problem. If you have a "Federal" spec somehow then you can just use an older manifold. But I doubt that if the Jeep was sold in California. The newer exhaust manifold with the cats will have issues with the old head. Some folks sell adapters to mate them up machined out of a solid hunk of steel. It'd have to be a damn good deal on that 0630 to be more cost effective than a 0331 TUPY or aftermarket replacement!

I believe the intake will, but the exhaust ports are a lot bigger. Not allowing it to mate right. I accidentally got an 0630 manifold gasket recently and I had exhaust leaks blowing out where the gasket had enlarged ports for 0630. Intake was nice and quiet tho.
