97 Cherokee oil STILL smells like gas
Alright, so I've been having this problem for a month now, https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/97-...ke-gas-224284/ is the first thread I posted about it.
After changing the fuel injectors, spark plugs, and the oil, I've been running it for about a week and I'm still smelling gas in the oil. I'm going to try to give as much pertinent information as I can without jumbling this whole thing up...bear with me
When changing the injectors the only issue I had was getting the rail back on. I didn't remove the fuel line or the throttle bracket (because I didn't have the right tools/didn't know how). Not sure if that could've caused any problems but it's something to note. So, when I was putting the rail back on, I put the injectors in the head first, then the rail onto the injectors. Should've done that the other way around. I had to tap the rail back in ever so gently with a small piece of wood and a hammer. Fuel injectors, go!
After that it was running like crap. Really rough. I could only think of a few things so I started with the plugs. Changed the plugs, and cleaned the distributor cap while i was at it. No hang ups changing the plugs. After that I took it for a good spin, it ran perfect. Idles at 750 even, no hesitation, no lag, no nothing.
So, that's what I've done to it. I hope that's enough info for an attempted diagnosis. The oil is starting to thin out a bit, and it smells like gas. What else could be going on and what other basic things should i do to this without throwing all of my bank accounts at it?

Stop sniffing the oil and drive it.
Is that the only issue you're having? Is it dumping tons of fuel in the oil? Can you easily light the oil on fire? If so, then you make have an issue but other than that... Just drive it.
You probably have blow-by. It's just how it is.

Haha, alright, fair point. I'm having no other issues. I don't know what blow-by is, but I cannot light the oil on fire. I got a similar opinion tonight, so I'm cool. I may have been over thinking things and freaking out for no reason. But on the bright side, new injectors and new plugs and a fresh oil change...it runs great! Thanks for putting things into perspective. =D

Yeah, fuel pressure. I'd guess you're running too rich. Gas is leftover from combustion and making it past your piston rings. Thoroughly clean your idle air control and throttle body. Run seafoam through your PCV and all vacuum ports and gap your plugs. Then check FP and let us know how it runs. Obviously you'll want to swap that oil once you get it resolved, but the fact that it doesn't ignite on your dipstick is a plus.
