97 xj coolant loss leading to overheating
i did about 1.5-2hrs of searching using the search feature on here and im not liking what im seeing, but what i read mainly affects the 2000+ crowd. im working on my aunts jeep, its a 97 cherokee country w/ the 4.0. it is loosing a lot of coolant at a rapid pace which is leading to overheating, but there is no visable leakage. checked the oil & it was good, pulled the plugs and they weren't carbon fouled but had a very light white coating on them more as if its running a little lean than having coolant on them. all 6 looked the same so im pretty sure its not coolant. heat works, thermostat is opening fan is working. my aunt and uncle swear that after driving it it smokes a bit, but i've had it at idle for 20min or better 2x now and i get no smoke. im going to drive it to work tonight to see what happens. does this sound like a cracked head or head gasket? im at a loss for anything else it could be. there was a build up of coolant residue at the filler neck on the radiator that i thought was a bad cap, also the line from the coolant reservor didnt have a clamp on it, i fixed both.
