97 XJ Fuel Pump Endless Nightmare
I have a 1997 Cherokee Sport, 4.0l, 4WD. Since last December, I am going on my 4th fuel pump. I bought an entire canister kit, to include the canister, pre-filters, pump, float, regulator/filter. The other 2 pumps were from O'Reilly's. Well here we are not 2 months since I replaced the last one, and it is acting up again. Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a reliable fuel pump (OEM is over $600) that won't cost me an arm an a leg, and one that will run well for more than a few months before it goes out. I am really getting tired of dropping this tank lol. Ground is good, voltage is 6.something V to pump. When I replace it, everything works great, for a while, however, eventually it looses pressure and starts to surge, backfire, and spit and sputter. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't had to go there yet (fortunately) but in general when it comes to fuel pumps it is hard to beat Walbro or Bosch.

"6. something V". Should be 12 Volts (battery voltage at least), not 6 volts.
Pull the fuel pump relay from the PDC and check the pins on the relay and the pin cavities in the PDC for corrosion (Black looking).
If okay, replace the relay.
