97 xj, surging and not shifting HELP!!!!!!!!

Default 97 xj, surging and not shifting HELP!!!!!!!!

just came out of the woods all was fine got about 5 mile down the road and it started surging, when i came to a redlight the rpms were up about 1500 rpms, then it was shifting until 4500 rpms, then the check engine light came on,, any idea's,, how do i get a code?

i turned the key on and off 5 times and got a 12 and the check engine light flashed 3 times

Sounds like a TPS issue. Check the TPS with a volt/ohm meter... see if the center wire makes a smooth voltage sweep from 4.5 volts to 0.5 volts as you sweep the throttle.

unfortunately i dont have a volt meter,, would this cause the sudden not shifting?

Yep.

The module-controlled transmission needs to know throttle-input to decide when to upshift/downshift.

great thx, now which one is it lol i see 3 things plugged into the throttle body, is it the one inbetween the valve cover and the throttle body?

definately the tps(throttle position sensor) my 2000 xj was doing the same thing and threw a tps code at me. i replaced it and shes running like a champ

it is on the backside of the opening of the throttle body. its just two star bolts holding it on along with a wire connection

whatever it is i need it lol, just glad it didnt crap out on my in the woods today, my buddy got stuck and his starter went so i pulled him to a rd to get towed home,,, just one of those days i guess
