So I should try to find a real gasket & filter screen, then use very little RTV to attach the gasket to the pan only? Or would high tack be better?

Thanks for all this advice.
I have been turning wrenches a long time, but there is plenty of details here that are new to me.

It's nice to be able to knows exactly what I'm up against, before i even start the job.

I would have to agree with you that there is a time and place for RTV sealant, but for me, I will buy the transmission pan gasket every time. I have a friend who does nothing but transmission over-hauls and rebuilds who has told me horror stories of what has come into his shop after mechanics have attempted to fix, but have made worse. The valve bodies have a series of small ball valves that are very sensitive to the slightest bit of dirt particle. That's the reason for the magnet in the sump to collect the smallest metal filing. The magnet won't pick up a ball of silicone sealant that has gotten dislodged from the do-it-yourself gasket "over hang" inside the pan.

His advice to me has been cleanliness when inside the tranny, and no RTV. He buys the AW-4 gasket from Toyota, if the other transmission part places are out.

Update; I installed a trans cooler today.

Autozone PN 911676, $38.99

It has "Supercool" whatever that is.

I put it in the line going from the top of the radiator, back to the trans.

I am sure it is the return to the trans, because i disco'ed it & started the engine.

Fluid came out of the radiator, not the line. For those wanting to "try" this, I suggest putting a rag over the line and trans fitting. Otherwise you will have fluid all over the engine compartment like I did.

Oh, and only run the engine for like two seconds. The fluid shoots out under a pretty good force.

I am going to see if the solenoid still acts up before going through all the fun of swapping in a new one. I am hoping it runs cool enough now.

We ALWAYS used a pan gasket. My boss was **** as they come but he knew his stuff and was as honest as they come. If you have the pan straight and the bottom of the trans clean there is no way it should leak -we have swapped pans on many vehicles since straightening them was not a choice.
Whenever you drop ur pan it is of the utmost importance to keep EVERYTHING as clean as possible. The valves that have to shuttle back an forth - 1 little piece of dirt could cause 1 to not move again.
Valvebodys are usually if not always brought to a clean bench and cleaned with ONLY the cleanest degreaser and air blown often to make sure nothing is in there.
I'm also of the camp if its an electro/mechanical part that will fail and the problem coukd very well be that -I will change them all.

i had the same problem with my tranny. i just went to the junkyard and got all three solinoids for 15.00 it didnt matter what i did to keep the tranny cooler. it still failed when warm so if your willing to take a gamble go to the junkyard and get them. but make sure its a pick and pull so you can see what the fliud looked like. my xj is a 97 and i could not test the solinoids thrue the harness and to drop the pan. the solinoids have to be up to temp where they would fail to test if they are bad or not

Default S1 going south

(1)check your TPS voltages
(2) check your S1 solenoid resistance (check all 3 of 'em)

If the TPS voltages are out of tolerance, or there is a flat spot rather than smooth transition from closed throttle to open throttle, it should be replaced.

If the S1 isn't working, or is going south, you will have a problem where the trans will not select 1st when in 3 or D, and will not downshift from 3-2. It may start out as an intermittent problem.

PM me your email address if you eant the AW4 trans and diagnosis manuals.
