Default 98 Cherokee Sport AW4 Auto Transmission Issues

Hey All,

I know I am not the first person to bring up this issue, but all other threads are yet to help me out so I'll start my own. My AW4 transmission has been having issues for about a week, seems like it will not go into first gear from stop and occasionally slips. Read engine codes and it threw out P0700 (powertrain control system) P0740 (torque converter) and P0758 (shift solenoid B). I recently replaced the B solenoid and torque converter as well as refilling with fresh fluid and new filter. That all seemed to do the job for about 12 hours, now I am back to a crawl from stop and I am now reading a solenoid A obd code. So in trying to fix two problems I created another. Could the codes be a result of cascading failures in the solenoids or wiring harness? I know very little about transmissions and even less about wiring and electrical. Any and all suggestions would be incredibly appreciated as I am at a loss.

read the resistance of all 3 solenoids, most easily done from a grey plug near the dipstick

This will indicate trouble with wiring and solenoids, if the reading is over 15 Ohms

Can also be done from Trans computer plug

you will need to consult FSM to get correct wire color/ pin position

Problems with 1st are usually the A solenoid. Check the wiring and the connectors in the wiring harness under the hood.

Got to www.cruiser54.com for instructions on dealing with the connector

Yea I read that somewhere, but I'm confused by that since originally (before I got my paws on the solenoids) I had no error code for solenoid A, only B, but was still having trouble getting in first from a stop. Thanks for the reply btw

I totally agree, Ill do it for sure. My confusion was just that the solenoid A error came up after I had tried to fix the B solenoid error code, when it felt like it was having issues going into first. But any who, ill get to testing all the above this weekend. Appreciate the help

It's not unusual for one code to hide another. Dunno why, but I have seen it many times. Fix known problems first, then another one pops up that was there all the time.

In hindsight, the kit with the 3 solenoids isn't much more than a single solenoid. I usually recommend just replacing all three while you're there. Definitely check the wiring and connectors, and measure the resistance of the solenoids at the underhood connector.

This may be helpful.

I'm getting a code involving solenoid B on my '98. Symptom is will intermittently not downshift automatically, so I have to use the gear selector to pull away from a stop and upshift from there. Just ordered the solenoid kit, gonna swap 'em all but will check the connector as 54 suggests above today.
