98 cherokee stuck in 4l

Default 98 cherokee stuck in 4l

hi,i have a 98 cherokee 4 litre auto & its stck in 4wd 4l,any ideas whats up with it & can i drive it slowly as it is about 100 miles to get it home or tow it on an a frame with all 4 wheels on the ground if i disconnect the propshaft?

Put it in 2wd back up then go forward. It sounds like like you don't use 4wd that much use it a lit each week and it should get better.

Pat, your 98 XJ has the non disconnect front axle so, it should be fine to drive home in 4HI. If you're worried about it, just remove your front driveshaft and you can drive it like that, just fine, until you figure out what's wrong with your transfer case. Just no 4WD which sucks for wintertime.

cheers 4 the answers guys,so then its ok to drive in 4L?trouble is it wont come out of 4l,its well stuck!do i need to drive slowly?not gonna mess anything up?cheers

Oh WoW!! I missed that part before, bro. 4LO is no good for driving on the road. Top speed I've ever dared in mine in 4LO was about 40 MPH and that thing was whining like heck.
Did you try rolling the Jeep fwd and backward while trying to shift it out of 4LO? Take a look underneath at the linkage, too. It could just have a stick or something jammed in it. You might get lucky.
My transfer case is temperamental in my 91 XJ. I always have to rock it fwd and backward to shift it into 4Hi or 4LO.

look at the bushing going from the tcase shift rail to the body every one told me it was a tcase shift fork
