I'd be hesitant on running it just on 5 anyway. When it does finally kick over, are you hearing any pronounced ticking? If you don't feel comfortable with pulling the valve cover and checking it all, nobody will blame you for taking it to a shop.
See if anyone else here has any good insight, and if you do take it to a shop, definitely post up what kind of a diagnosis they had for you and what repair/parts they plan on doing.
Best of luck, keep us updated!

So my 98 has a dead cylinder on number 1, I know that. What I'm dealing with is that I'm getting white smoke out the exhaust on startup and that it is sucking in some on the exhaust tip so I'm thinking that my exhaust valve may be stuck open. Unluckily that doesn't explain why the gas continues to roll into it and why it smokes on start up.
I've checked all the easy fixes, plugs, wires, distributor cap. If it is my exhaust valve does any one have an idea on a way to try and fix it without yanking my valve cover off? If that's my only way I'm taking ti to a mechanic but you cant blame me for trying to find a cheaper way.

This is true, a simple valve job can turn into a complete engine replacement. Call around to some different shops some have their own tow trucks and may wave the towing fee if you have it fixed by them.
